Grace C. Mathews
June 12, 2016Grace C, Mathews, 91, of Wheaton Maryland passed away Sunday, June 12th, 2016 in her apartment at Sunrise of Pikesville of congestive heart failure. Grace was born April 25, 1925 in Addy Washington to Benjamin and Ella Laveta Cottman.
Grace married William G. Mathews Jr., a pilot during WW11, in Deming, NM. After William finished college, they moved to Wheaton in 1952 where Grace resided until 2012. Grace was an accomplished seamstress, rug maker and gardener. She was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Aspen Hill for over 60 years where she led the Altar Guild. Born of pioneer stock, her father came to the Northwest on a wagon train that left from the Nebraska territory. She was genuine, brave, adventurous, loving, had a generous spirit, and was loved and respected by her family and community. She loved to cook and her cinnamon rolls were something that made every Christmas special.
Grace was survived by her older brother Henry Cottman of Seattle, WA., her son William G. Mathews 111 and daughter Catherine Stevenson, grandchildren: Gwendolyn, Deborah, Melissa, Thomas, Rebecca, and Joshua, great-grandchildren: Sydney, Henry, Jake, Steele, Liam and Charlotte Grace. She was predeceased by her husband William G. Mathews Jr., parents Benjamin and Ella Laveta and siblings: Agnes, Benjamin and Laveta.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Damascus Maryland. Grace will be interred at Arlington Cemetery next to her husband William at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Episcopal Relief Fund or the National Cathedral Building Fund.
