Terrence Michael Burns, Sr., passed from this life on Saturday, November 21, 2020. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary (“Miggy”) Margaret (Ciango), and by his nine children who were the pride and joy of his life: Patrick (Hilary), Bridget Cheatham (Marc), Terrence Michael, Jr. (Ana), Joseph (Brittany), Timothy, Brian (Kristin), Shannon Bednar (Ray), Kelly Salb (TJ), and Kevin (Jenn). He is also survived by his siblings, Sharron Murray (Jim), Maureen Cusic, Gail Dailey (Russ), Chip (Ellen), Liz Hunter (Kent).
Terry was born in Washington, D.C. on May 18, 1947. The son of Francis X. Burns, Sr. and Eileen (Fox), he grew up in Silver Spring, MD with his eight brothers and sisters. He graduated from Blair High School and was proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Army in Vietnam from 1966 -1968. Upon returning from the Service he began a career as a Draftsman and eventually became a salesman for D.M.R. Associates in Gaithersburg, MD, from which he retired in 2015.
Terry was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Damascus, MD, where he played guitar and sang in the Church Group with his brother, Chip. Outside of his faithful devotion to his family and his church, his other love was golf. He and his brothers, and eventually his sons, would create yearly tournaments for which the prize was “bragging rights”. He was able to brag a lot; however, it’s rumored some of the tournament results are still under dispute.
Terry was someone you could always count on to be there whenever you needed him. Whether you needed help in any area or maybe just a good laugh, he was there for you. He lived a life of service, not only for his family, but for his church, friends, and neighbors. He was charmingly boisterous, he was a barrel of laughs, his heart over-flowed with love, and his soul was full of life. His magnetic personality and commanding presence will be greatly missed by so many.
He was lovingly known as “Grandpa” and “PawPaw” to his 11 grandchildren: Cory Burns, Marshall & Mason Cheatham, Graydon Burns, Ryan Burns and Tyler Wallace, Baylee and Chloe Bednar, and Marleigh, Olivia, and Caiden Salb. Never one to shy away from bribery by treats, PawPaw won over all their hearts early by always obliging to sneak them a sweet or two when Grandma Mimi wasn’t looking.
He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Eileen, as well as 3 brothers: Tom, Tim, and Chris Burns.
We were beyond blessed to have been privileged to share so many memorable moments with him and will lovingly carry these precious memories with us forever.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 4 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 9250 Damascus Road, Damascus, MD
