Sherralyn Anita Samples Bassey, 72, formerly of Germantown, Maryland, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
Sherry was born August 29, 1949, in Clay County, West Virginia to the late Colonel Archibald Quentin Samples and Eva Dale Samples. Moreover, fond memories of Sherry singing “How Great Thou Art” at her church as a child have been shared to her children. She was a talented artist.
Sherry attended West Virginia State College, where she met her husband of 52 years, Dr. Charles O. Bassey. Together, they started their small family then moved to Ibadan, Nigeria where she would work for the Rockefeller Foundation, and he would practice medicine.
The family returned to Gaithersburg, Maryland where Sherry would start working for Montgomery College, earn her Associates Degree also from Montgomery College and retire after 27 years of service.
November 9, 2000, Sherry held her first grandson Ryan Holt. She got to hold four more grandbabies after him, Seth Holt, Tabitha Holt, Quentin Bassey Jr., and Christabella Hood.
Sherry raised four children in Germantown, Maryland where she was devoted to taking care of her family. Sherry enjoyed frequent trips with her children and grandchildren to Williamsburg, Virginia. Fun times and countless memories were made in Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. She cherished every moment spent with her family as seen in the photos she’d take with each visit they had.
Sherry is survived by her husband, and best friend, Charles O. Bassey Sr., two daughters, Eva Bassey and Ekanem (Kani) Bassey, her two sons Charles Bassey Jr., Quentin Bassey and His wife Mona Bassey, her five grandchildren Ryan Holt, Seth Holt, Tabitha Holt, Quentin Bassey Jr., and Bella Hood, her two sisters, Phyllis Samples and Katie Kahn, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be at Saint Paul Catholic Church, 9250E Damascus Rd, Damascus, MD 20872, on Friday, March 18, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral services begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Germantown, Maryland
Sherry will be deeply missed by all.
