Mary Jane (Custer) Bishop, 85, of Mount Airy, MD passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at home in the care of her family and with the support of the Frederick Health Hospice.

Devoted wife of the Reverend Franklin Bishop of nearly 63 years, they were married February 8, 1958. She was born November 20, 1935 at North Glade, Garrett Co., MD the daughter of the late Heyward S. and Effie B. (Friend) Custer. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Melvin and Dale Custer; two sisters, Phyllis (Custer) Knepp and Evelyn (Custer) Steyer. Mary is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Bishop) Sier, Janie Bishop, and Melissa Bishop-Bryant and husband Glenn Bryant; three grandchildren, Ashley Sier, Lindsay Sier, and Simon Bryant; one sister, Shirley (Thomas) Bernard; three brothers, Leo (Janet), Roger, and Clarence (JoAnn) Custer.

Mary was proud of being one of ten children on the family farm in Garrett County. She loved to talk about what it was like on the farm and her job of milking the cows.

Mary graduated from Southern Garrett County High School, Oakland, MD in 1953. She was a member of Circleville United Methodist Church, North Huntingdon, PA where Rev. Bishop was pastor from 1991-2000. Mary faithfully supported the congregations where she and her husband served.

Following her husband’s retirement in 2000, they moved to Mount Airy to be near family. Mary attended Ijamsville UMC during and following Rev. Bishop’s time as part-time pastor.

Mary loved spending her time outdoors taking care of her flowers and garden and watching everything grow. One of her favorites was her raspberries. She always loved watching birds, especially hummingbirds.

A private grave side service and internment will be held at Howard Chapel UMC. Pastor Rodney Fry of Ijamsville UMC will officiate.

The family request contributions to be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265; or to Frederick Health Hospice, 1 Frederick Way, Frederick, MD  2170.
