Sherwood D. Duvall, Damascus, MD, a farmer since the age of 14,  passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital.  Born on the family farm in Damascus, he celebrated his 99th birthday on September 1. He was the last surviving child of Sherwood and Verdie R. Fulk Duvall, having been predeceased in death by his sisters, Glenna Smith, Miriam O’Hara, and Magalis Waters and brothers, Garner Duvall, Brandon Duvall, and Kenneth Duvall.

Sherwood spent his entire life operating the family farm after his father passed away in 1933.  He raised tobacco and wormweed as cash crops and corn, wheat, oats, and hay, and shipped milk from 1944-1958.  He was a member of the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association and the Montgomery County Farm Bureau.  He farmed in partnership with his younger brother, Kenneth, from the late 1940s to the early 1950s, and kept the farm operational after he stopped shipping milk in 1958 by continuing to raise animals and crops while he was employed at IBM in Gaithersburg as a Plant Protection Officer.  Today, part of the land is rented for crop production.  Sherwood took pride in his farm produce and animals, and always had a home garden, harvesting green beans and tomatoes this year. He had a wealth of stories about the past and kept up with all the current events. The morning of his death, he was watching TV and commenting about Korea.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Hazel Marie Butcher Duvall, and their three children:  Sherry D. Lloyd and husband Charles (Mac), Timothy L. Duvall and wife Nancy, and Brooke S. Duvall, all of Damascus.  He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren:  Kevin, Carminda, Cecilia and Alessandra Lloyd; Keith, Amy, Karianne and David Lloyd; Kendal, Gionara, Thomas and Eva Lua Lloyd; and Joan Kelso.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, at Molesworth-Williams P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Rd., Damascus, MD.  On Monday, September 11, family and friends are invited to an 11 a.m. graveside service in the Damascus United Methodist Church Cemetery, directly across Woodfield Rd. (Rt. 124) from the Church at 9700 New Church Street, Damascus, MD 20872.

A Celebration of Life Luncheon in the Church Dining Hall will follow at 12 noon.

Pallbearers are Tim Duvall, Charles (Mac) Lloyd, Keith Lloyd, Kendal Lloyd, Bill Duvall, and Greg Ruppert.  Honorary pallbearers are Brooke Duvall, Kevin Lloyd, and Danny Ifert.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be given in memory of Sherwood to the Damascus United Methodist Church where he was the oldest member.
