Thomas Irving Fulks, Jr., age 88, died Saturday, April 29, 2017 at his home in Monrovia, Maryland.

He was born September 6, 1928, on the family farm in Gaithersburg, Md. a son of the late T. Irving and Ida Kephart Fulks.

Tom graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1946, and continued his education at Strayer Business College with a degree in accounting in 1948.  He went to work for the Montgomery County Government in November 1948 starting in the Department of Liquor Control, then the Budget Office, and finally the Department of Finance.  He retired after 30 year service as Chief, Division of Accounts.

During Tom’s time working for the Montgomery County Government, he also served the Gaithersburg/Washington Grove Fire Department for almost 20 years.  He held various positions in the GWGFD such as Treasurer, President, Board of Directors and was chairman for several years of the annual Labor Day Parade. He was chairman of the building committee to establish Company 28 – Redland, chairman of various committees to purchase trucks & equipment, and chairman of the committee which hired the first paid firemen in GWGFD.

After retiring from the county, Tom began a “second career” with his son Thomas III training harness horses stabled at the Frederick Fair Grounds, and raising fouls each year at the home in Monrovia.  In 1987, with the stable growing, a move was made to a farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  Tom & Tommy trained their own horses as well as those of other owners they raced at harness tracks on the east coast, such as Yonkers, N.Y.; Meadowlands & Freehold, N.J.; Liberty Bell, Pa.; Dover & Harrington, Delaware; Ocean Downs, Freestate & Rosecroft, Maryland; the Meadows in Pennsylvania, and various Pennsylvania State Fairs; Woodstock Virginia Fair; Lewisburg West Virginia State Fair and the Frederick Fair.

Tom was an avid gardener and loved sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors, especially tomatoes and making sauerkraut.

Tom was also a lifelong Redskin Fan and Orioles Fan.  He was also an active member of Mt. View United Methodist Church in Damascus.

Surviving him are his wife of 40+ years Jeanne Fulks, step-son: Craig Irwin and wife Cindy; grandson:  Thomas I, Fulks IV; step-grandchildren:  Alec Irwin and wife Lindsey; Cole Irwin; Shelby Irwin; Saige Irwin; sister: Diane Adams; sister-in-law Barbara Provin and husband Philip; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son Thomas I. Fulks III; daughter Beverly Jelks and  stepson Todd Irwin,

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland.  Services and interment will be private.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 3 at Mt. View United Methodist Church, 11501 Mt. View Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872.
